PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct 14, 2013) – Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) and sophomore Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) each earned major American Athletic Conference Weekly Honors, taking home Goalkeeper of the Week and Defender of the Week, respectively.

It marks the second time this season two Scarlet Knights (11-2-1, 4-1 AAC) won a major award in the same week, as junior forward Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) and freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) earned Offensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Sept. 16.

Prior, that feat had not been achieved since Oct. 23, of the 2006 season, when Kristie Lang was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and Erin Guthrie was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week.

Janosz and Skroski combined to spearhead the RU backline over the weekend, guiding the squad to a pair of 1-0 shutout victories over conference opponents. Janosz made two saves in the 1-0 win against Houston (Oct. 10) to kickoff the weekend before recording three against SMU (Oct. 13) to complete her sixth shutout of the season.

Skroski and the Scarlet Knights’ backline allowed just eight shots in consecutive matches, as Skroski notched the first points of her career on what proved to be the game-winning goal against SMU. Skroski cleaned up a ball off a corner kick by blasting it dead on net from five yards out in the second minute of action. From there the defense did the rest, surrendering just three second-half shots in the 1-0 victory.

Skroski is the first RU defensive player to earn conference player of the week honors since current assistant coach Meg Ryan did so on Oct. 24, 2007. Ryan was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week three times during her playing career “On the Banks.”

Janosz stood out as the conference goalkeeper of the week for the second time of her career, being named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 10, 2011.

Five Scarlet Knight have been placed on the honor roll this season: redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Missasauga, Canada),  Scholz, sophomore Sara Corson (Metuchen, N.J.) and Tiernan earned the honor once, while Janosz has appeared on the honor roll twice. RU’s five weekly honor roll recipients marks the most for the program since 2006.

The Scarlet Knights will hit the road this weekend to take on No. 19/20 UCF (Oct. 18) and USF (Oct. 20) in a pair of pivotal American Athletic Conference matches. With 13 points, UCF (11-2-2, 4-0-1 AAC) is ahead of Rutgers by one point in the standings, while USF (7-4-3, 2-3 AAC) looks to get back on track after dropping a pair of road matches to Louisville and Cincinnati.
