PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 21, 2013) – A day after being named to the MAC Hermann Award Trophy Watch List, redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada) was one of 30 athletes selected as a candidate for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
“These honors are extremely gratifying for the entire program,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “It’s a reflection of the program and it’s a reflection of Jonelle’s hard work, dedication and talent.”
Of the 60 candidates, 34 have grade point averages of 3.5 or higher – with three student-athletes who have achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA – and 13 are All-Americans.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Men’s and Women’s College Cup® championships in December.
Each of the 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition
Filigno has collected a number of individual honors this preseason, including a No. 12 ranking in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Women’s Top 100. The organization also placed her in its Preseason Best XI Second Team for her play during the 2012 season.
Following her record-setting success last year, TopDrawerSoccer named Filigno to its 2012 Third Team. The forward for the Canadian National Team was also named the Big Apple Soccer Player of the Year, as well as being named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region First Team and NSCAA All-America Second Team.
Filigno tied the school’s single-season mark of 15 goals during her junior campaign, a record previously held by former standout and U.S. Women’s National Team star, Carli Lloyd. Her 35 points were good for third on the single-season list, while she broke the school record with seven game-winning goals. For her career, the forward is third in game-winning scores (12), fifth in goals (25) and sixth in points (60).
