MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (August 13, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer suffered a 3-0 defeat to West Virginia on Tuesday in Morgantown, W.Va., in the Scarlet Knights’ first exhibition match of the 2013 preseason. Despite the loss, eight freshmen – Jennifer Andresen (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), Victoria Prager (Mount Laurel, N.J.), Jessica Puchalski (South Brunswick, N.J.), Ali Ryan (Bowie, Md.), Jenna Seddon (Galloway, N.J.), Erin Smith (Medford Lakes, N.J.), Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.), and Nikki Hudson (Baltimore, Md.) – made their collegiate debuts for head coach Glenn Crooks.
“We really liked the way we kept the ball and I think we made a lot of progress today,” Crooks said. “We played everybody we brought and I think since we have two scrimmages it’s very important we got everyone an opportunity. We had eight freshmen that made their collegiate debuts so there were certainly some nerves.
“The thing that I was trying to do was blend the lineup in a way where we weren’t in a position where all freshmen were on the field at the same time, or all upperclassman at the same time. I can really say that everyone made a positive contribution and hopefully this will be a step forward for our team heading into our season-opener on August 23rd against Drexel.”
RU had five players log over 60 minutes of action, as Tiernan led the Scarlet Knights with two shots. The squad also bested WVU, 2-0, in corner kick attempts.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the 29th minute off a strike from Bryce Banuelos. Less than 10 minutes later, Tessa Broadwater made it a 2-0 game, blasting a shot to the far post and past senior goalkeeper Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.).
WVU’s Kara Blosser tacked on the team’s third goal of the contest in the 60th minute after a cross into the box from Frances Silva. Silva was credited with the assist on all three Mountaineers’ goals.
The Scarlet Knights return to Piscataway for their final exhibition match of the preseason on Saturday, Aug. 17 against Richmond at Yurcak Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Crooks will lead his team in its season debut for the 14th consecutive year on August 23, when the Scarlet Knights host Drexel at Yurcak Field.
