PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 5, 2012) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team will face Colgate at Van Doren Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, it was revealed on Monday. The match is slated for Saturday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. Virginia will host La Salle in the first round on the other side of the bracket.
“I am thrilled that this team has the opportunity to compete again this season,” said senior captain Tricia DiPaolo. “We have started to play some very good soccer and I believe that will carry over into the NCAA Tournament. This is a great feeling and it is hard to describe how happy we are.”
“This feels amazing,” said senior Maura McLaughlin. “We are not going to take this opportunity for granted and could not be happier to be continuing our season.”
The winners of the first round matches will play on Nov. 16 or 18 in the second round.
Rutgers (12-7-1) will be making its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance and sixth under Crooks. This is the first NCAA appearance for RU since 2009, when the Scarlet Knights advanced to the second round.
Under Crooks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Scarlet Knights are 4-0-1, advancing all five times. Overall in the NCAA’s, Crooks is 5-4-3.
This will be the tenth all-time meeting between Rutgers and Colgate (11-5-4), with the Scarlet Knights owning 6-1-2 record. The two teams last faced off on Oct. 27, 2010, when RU earned a 4-1 victory.
Colgate won the 2012 Patriot League Championship, defeating Navy, 1-0, Sunday, marking its 12th Patriot League title. The squad earned their sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2009.
Pacing the Raiders is senior forward Jillian Kinter with 37 points on 14 goals and nine assists. Between the pipes will be senior Ashley Walsh, who owns a 1.46 GAA with 99 saves through 20 matches. In her 22nd season, head coach Kathy Brawn owns a 237-143-32 record with Colgate.
