Storrs, Conn. (November 1, 2012) – Rutgers women’s soccer redshirt junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) and freshman Hayley Katkowski (Westford, Mass.) have been selected to All-BIG EAST teams, the league announced on Thursday. Filigno was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while Katkowski earned second team and All-BIG EAST Rookie Team honors.
“It’s a great feeling to have been chosen as an All-BIG EAST First Team player,” said Filigno. “It’s important to recognize that this individual award comes from the team’s success as a whole. We are eager for the upcoming NCAA selection and keeping our fingers crossed.”
“I’m extremely honored to have received these awards, but I have to give credit to my teammates and coaches who have given me the opportunity to achieve them,” said Katkowski. “They are the ones that inspire me every day.”
Filigno becomes the first Scarlet Knight to earn first team honors since Jen Anzivino and Erin Guthrie in 2009. The forward was named to the second team in 2010. Katkowski is the first freshman to be named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team since Kim Brandao in 2002.
A three-time BIG EAST Player of the Week, Filigno ranks first in the league in game-winning goals (seven), second in points (33) and goals (14). In the NCAA, the 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist sits third in game winners, ninth in goals and 18th in points.
In the Rutgers record book, Filigno ranks fourth in single season points, fifth in goals and first in game winners. For her career, the forward currently sits third in game-winning scores, fifth in goals (24) and eighth in points (58).
Katkowski has made an immediate impact for RU in a holding midfield role. The rookie has started all 20 games – one of just three Scarlet Knights to do so this season – and is averaging 89 minutes per contest. The Westford, Mass., native earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection on Oct. 8 after helping Rutgers to a 1-0-1 week, including a shutout victory at DePaul and a 2-2 draw at No. 24/25 Notre Dame.
