Redshirt senior Shannon Woeller notched her second goal of the season in the 10th minute.

South Bend, Ind. (October 5, 2012) – Behind two first-half scores, the Rutgers women’s soccer team (9-6-1, 2-5-1) knotted No. 24 Notre Dame (10-3-2, 6-0-1) by a 2-2 score on a windy and rainy Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

It marks the second-straight year that RU has earned a draw with ND. The Scarlet Knights interrupt the Irish’s seven-game winning streak and complete a four-point weekend in BIG EAST play.

Redshirt senior Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, BC, Canada) notched her second goal of the season in the 10th minute. Following a corner by Cassie Inacio (Manalapan, N.J.), Woeller put a shot on frame that UND goalkeeper Sarah Voigt dove to save. The center back corralled her own rebound, blasting the ball into the bottom left of the net.

Notre Dame answered six minutes later with an unassisted score by Crystal Thomas. Off a fast break, senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made a diving save on the freshman, but Thomas snuck the rebound past the right post.

Thomas scored again in the 35th minute. Brittany Von Rueden started the play, dishing to Sammy Scofield who played the ball to Thomas. Thomas put the ball in the back of the net to give the Irish a 2-1 advantage.

The Scarlet Knights would not quit, scoring just over a minute later. Redshirt senior Tricia DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.) sailed a cross into the box that Voigt could not handle. Sophomore Stefanie Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) was there for the tap in – her first goal of the season.

Rutgers returns home next weekend for matches against Louisville and Cincinnati. Friday’s match against the Cardinals will serve as a doubleheader with the men and will also honor Olympic gold medalist Carli Lloyd.
