Syracuse, N.Y. (September 30, 2012) – Rutgers women’s soccer (8-6, 1-5) dropped a 1-0 double overtime decision to Syracuse (7-4-2, 4-1-1) Sunday afternoon at SU Soccer Stadium.
Alyscha Mottershead scored the game-winning goal for the Orange in the 102nd minute. Jenna Rickan dished a pass to the senior midfielder just outside the box and Mottershead struck the left side of the net for the score.
The Scarlet Knights have dropped three-straight contests for the first time since Sept. 25-Oct. 2 , 2011. Senior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made nine saves in the effort, falling to 3-3 on the season.
Syracuse outshot Rutgers by a 16-8 mark. RU came out of the gates strong, putting pressure on the SU defense, but could not muster a shot in the overtime periods.
The best chance of the first half came on an attempt by Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canda). The redshirt junior forward put a shot on frame in the third minute, but SU keeper Brittany Anghel was there for the save.
Rutgers returns to action next weekend at DePaul and Notre Dame. RU and DPU square off on Friday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. The Scarlet Knights and Irish meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
