PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 28, 2012) – In their first BIG EAST matchup of the weekend, the Rutgers women’s soccer team (8-5, 1-4) dropped a 1-0 decision to St. John’s (5-7, 1-4) at Belson Stadium on Friday evening.
The game marked the 16th meeting between the conference opponents, and despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights still hold the series against the Red Storm, 9-4-4.
Rutgers keeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) recorded one save on ten shots from the Red Storm, two of which were on goal.
St. John’s sophomore Deanna Murino scored the lone goal of the game in the 18th minute of play after a shot gave the ball a hard bounce into the top of the net. This marked Murino’s first goal of the season. Caitlyn McLaughlin and Hailey Hemmer were credited with the assists.
Rutgers sophomore Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) worked to get an attack going for the Scarlet Knights, taking three shots and putting one on goal.
RU returns to action on Sunday with their second conference matchup of the weekend against Syracuse at 1 p.m. The teams have met 14 times, with RU leading the series 7-6-1. RU dropped their last game against the Orange in 2011 in a double overtime contest, 2-1.
