PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 20, 2012) – Rutgers women’s soccer redshirt junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Redshirt senior Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada) has also been named to the league honor roll.
An All-BIG EAST Preseason selection, Filigno becomes the first conference offensive player of the week since Ashley Jones on Sept. 21, 2009.
After helping Canada to a bronze medal in the Olympic Games earlier this month, the redshirt junior roared into the collegiate season with three of RU’s four goals. Filigno scored both game winners in a 2-0 weekend for the Scarlet Knights, including a double overtime golden goal against RV Ohio State.
A 2011 BIG EAST Third Team selection, Woeller earned a spot on the honor roll after helping Rutgers to 191 minutes of shutout soccer. The center back scored her first career goal in a 3-0 win over Monmouth, rebounding a penalty kick and burying it past the keeper for the final score.
Filigno was also named College Sports Madness Offensive Player of the Week and to TopDrawerSoccer.com's and Soccer America's Team of the Week. She moves into a tie for seventh all-time in the RU career record book with seven game winners.
Filigno, Woeller and the rest of the Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Yurcak Field this weekend. RU takes on Bucknell on Friday, Aug. 24 at 5:30 p.m. and Siena on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.
