Providence, R.I. (August 7, 2012) – Led by redshirt junior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, ON, Canada) on the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, the Rutgers women’s soccer team was selected fourth in the National Division in the 2012 BIG EAST Preseason Poll, the conference announced Tuesday. The Scarlet Knights totaled 78 points, including one first place vote.
Notre Dame was selected first in the National Division, followed by Louisville and Georgetown. Villanova took the fifth spot with 52 points, as Seton Hall, DePaul and Cincinnati rounded out the final places.
Filigno, who returns to the Scarlet Knights after playing with the Canadian National Team in the 2012 London Olympics, was selected to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as a freshman. This marked the second-straight year the forward has been named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
Despite playing in just seven games last season, Filigno led RU with 13 points on six goals and one assist. On the international stage, Filigno has tallied 47 caps with the Canadian National Team and was twice named Canada’s U20 Female Player of the Year.
Rutgers finished the 2011 season with an 8-8-3 mark, going 3-5-3 in BIG EAST play. The Scarlet Knights made their 12th-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Championship, the longest active streak among conference members. RU returns eight starters and welcomes 10 newcomers.
RU kicks off the season at Monmouth on Aug. 17. The Scarlet Knights are looking for the 300th victory in program history. The home opener is scheduled for Aug. 19 at 1 p.m. All home games will be streamed live via RVision, presented by AT&T, on www.scarletknights.com.
