PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior All-American Carli Lloyd (Delran, NJ) scored in the 87th minute to lift the Rutgers women’s soccer team (8-4-4, 2-1-1 BIG EAST) to a 1-0 victory against Villanova (10-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) Oct. 15 at Yurcak Field.
The ball came across the box to freshman Jaime Komar (Matawan, NJ), who got the ball to Lloyd’s feet just outside of the box. Lloyd then buried the ball in the back of the net for her sixth game-winning goal of the year, a new RU record. In addition, Lloyd moved into a tie for first in career shots (216) and now is in sole possession of second place in career game-winning goals (13). Freshman Robyn Jones (Titusville, NJ) made two saves for the victory (6-4-4).
“This was a tremendous win for us,” fourth-year head coach Glenn Crooks said. “It’s big in terms of the conference, in the region, and for the national picture. The second half was the best we’ve played as a unit all year.”
Rutgers was ranked fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and tied for seventh by Soccerbuzz in the Mid-Atlantic Region this week (Oct. 13). Villanova was rated seventh by the NSCAA and fifth by Soccerbuzz in the same region. Even more importantly, Rutgers moved up from tied for fourth in the Mid-Atlantic Division to third place with seven points, one ahead of Villanova (six). The top four teams from each of the BIG EAST’s two divisions will qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament, which will begin with quarterfinal matches Nov. 1-2.
Rutgers will play its final road match of the 2003 regular season Sunday, Oct. 19, when the Scarlet Knights take on Virginia Tech in a BIG EAST cross-divisional match at 1:00 p.m.
