  • WILLIAMSBURG, VA - JUCO transfer Ricardo Arenas (Guatemala City) scored the game-winning goal for Rutgers (1-0) in overtime to cap a 3-2, come-from-behind win over No. 25-ranked William & Mary at Barksdale Field on Saturday night in the season opener for both schools.

In the seventh minute of the first overtime period, Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay) moved the ball past the William & Mary defense to Arenas who hit the back lower left corner of the net, igniting a celebration on the field for the Scarlet Knights.

William & Mary jumped out to an early, 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the match as Patrick Scherder scored for the Tribe. The score would be the lone tally of the first half as both teams played the next 75 minutes without a goal.

With Rutgers pressing for the equalizer, the Tribe’s Jarrett Thomas got past the defense, lobbing the ball over the hands of a leaping Scott Conway (Aston, PA), tending the Rutgers goal, to increase the Tribe’s lead to 2-0.

Rutgers tallied its first score in the 85th minute as Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay) rocketed a ball to William & Mary goalkeeper Kris Rake, who bobbled it, allowing the ball to cross the line for the score. The goal was ruled an own goal. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, senior tri-captain Josh Gros (Mechanicsburg, PA) tied the match, scoring off a rebound shot from freshman Jason Pelletier (Middletown, PA).

"I am delighted with the amount of character this team showed tonight to comeback," Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso said. "We had a good team effort, outplaying them in the second half. Ricardo [Arenas] announced his arrival in Division I college soccer tonight, playing in his first game."

Rutgers outshot William & Mary, 16-14 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Both Conway and Rake recorded five saves.

William and Mary is the second top-25 the Scarlet Knights have faced in 2003, as Rutgers tied No. 7 Indiana in preseason competition. A total of nine newcomers saw action tonight, as Reasso utilized his 19-member recruiting class.

Rutgers returns home to face BIG EAST foe Providence in the season home opener at Yurcak Field, Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m
