FORT WAYNE, IN - In its final tune-up before the regular season opener at William & Mary, Saturday, Aug. 30, the Rutgers men’s soccer team tied 7th-ranked Indiana, 1-1, at the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne Indiana.
Rutgers and Indiana played solid defense throughout the match as more than 75 minutes passed without a score.
In the 78th minute, freshman Larry Mark (Beltsville, MD), an NSCAA High School All-American last season, dribbled to the left corner, punching the ball in from 12 yards out for the unassisted goal to break the scoreless tie.
It appeared Rutgers was on its way to victory when with 23 seconds remaining in regulation, Indiana’s Pat Yates took a feed from Josh Tudela and drilled it between the posts for the equalizer.
Senior Scott Conway (Aston, PA) played the entire match in goal for the Scarlet Knights, recording six saves. Jay Nolly made four saves, playing the entire match in goal for the Hoosiers. Indiana outhsot Rutgers, 12-9, and held a 6-4 edge on corner kicks.
Both squads were aggressive as four yellow cards (3 RU, 1 IU) were issued throughout the match.
Similar to Friday’s math with Michigan State, Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso went with a young lineup as 10 of RU’s 19-member recruiting class saw action with four making starts.
The tie is the second in a row against Indiana as the Scarlet Knights and the Hoosiers played to a scoreless tie in last year’s season-opening match.
