  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men’s soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the 2003 BIG EAST preseason poll, voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches.

    Rutgers, which finished last season 8-8-3 following a loss to Connecticut in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals, received 89 votes to place behind last year’s conference champion Boston College, who tallied 117 votes. St. John’s was picked to capture the 2003 title, garnering 135 votes, while Notre Dame was second with 128 votes, followed by Connecticut with 127 votes.

    Individually, junior Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) was selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Karcz tallied 15 points last season, scoring six goals and three assists. He was second on the team in scoring, while earning All-BIG EAST Third Team honors.

    Rutgers, under the direction of head coach Bob Reasso, opens the 2003 campaign traveling to Fort Wayne, IN to participate in the IPFW Preseason Showcase. The Scarlet Knights will face Michigan State on Friday, Aug. 22, and Indiana on Sunday, Aug. 24 in two exhibition contests. Rutgers will begin its regular season on the road at William and Mary, in the first match in the Tribe’s new soccer stadium on Saturday, Aug. 30.
