PISCATAWAY, NJ – On the strength of the freshmen trio of forwards Adam Sternberger (May’s Landing, NJ), Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) and Kevin O’Connor (Freehold, NJ), the Rutgers men’s soccer team posted a 4-3 victory over rival St. John’s during a spring exhibition match Tuesday evening in Piscataway.
“We are quite pleased with our team's performance last night and during the spring season,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “It was a good way to finish up and we are all looking forward to the fall.”
Sternberger, a red-shirt freshman who was sidelined with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2003, led the Scarlet Knights with a pair of goals. Simi and O’Connor each added a goal in the victory. The game marked the final spring match for the squad.
All three played the majority of Rutgers’ games in 2004. Simi lead the trio in scoring with two goals and an assist. Sternberger’s lone goal of the season was the game-winner against Providence. O’Connor contributed two assists.
Rutgers will open its 2005 fall season with an exhibition match against George Mason, Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field in Piscataway.
