  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Redshirt freshman Adam Sternberger (May’s Landing, NJ) scored with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match to lift Rutgers to a 1-0 victory over Providence in BIG EAST men’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. With the victory, the Scarlet Knights even their record to 2-2-2, and 1-0-1 in BIG EAST play. Providence falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference action.

Rutgers dominated the possession throughout the match, outshooting the Friars, 21-1. After several near goals by the Scarlet Knights, Sternberger put it in the back of the net for the winning score. The redshirt freshman, who sat out last season with a knee injury, saw his first collegiate action Sunday afternoon. The forward received a cross from senior co-captain Anthony Schiavino (North Hunterdon, NJ), juggling it in the air with his left foot before firing a hard shot from 10 yards out in the 78th minute.

Sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) had a quiet day in goal for the Scarlet Knights, as the Friars did not register a shot on goal all contest. Providence keeper Jeff Newman made four saves in the match.

Prior to Sternberger’s goal, Rutgers had several close opportunities to score. Sophomore Nick LaBrocca (Howell, NJ) collided with the Friars’ goalkeeper while fighting for a ball, sending the Friar keeper to the ground. Sophomore Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Holland) corralled the ball, firing a hard shot from outside the box, which Newman jumped up and deflected just high of the cross bar.

“We played very tough today,” said Rutgers head coach Bob Reasso. “We were able to turn our possession into a goal. A lot of young guys played vital roles today and were very active. We need to use this as a springboard heading into the conference schedule.”

Freshman Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ) made his first collegiate appearance on Sunday, recording two shots. The forward nearly scored his first collegiate goal, but his attempt to lob the ball over the keeper sailed just wide of the near post.

Rutgers extends its unbeaten streak against Providence to 10 matches, holding a 9-0-1 mark all-time against the Friars.

Rutgers continues BIG EAST play, traveling to Villanova, PA, for a 3:30 p.m. matchup with the Wildcats on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
