  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Rutgers men’s soccer team opened the season Friday night with a 3-3 tie against Pittsburgh in front of 2,091 fans at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights took a 3-2 advantage late in regulation, but Pittsburgh countered with less than six minutes remaining to forge the tie in double overtime. RU moves to 0-0-1 for the season, while Pittsburgh stands out 1-0-1. Both teams move to 0-0-1 in BIG EAST competition.

Rutgers dominated play early and 15 minutes into the match senior Andrew Herman (Oceanside, NY) scored his first goal in a Scarlet Knight uniform. Herman, who transferred from American University for his final season of eligibility, intercepted a pass and raced down an open field, beating the Panther goalie for the score. The goal was the first of two Herman scored on the night.

Pittsburgh regrouped and went on the attack with Keeyan Young netting a goal in the 31st minute to tie the match at 1-1. Just before halftime, Pittsburgh was the beneficiary of a misplay by the Rutgers back line which resulted in an own goal for the Panthers. Junior co-captain Abdul Kargbo (Alxandria, VA) headed the ball back to goalie George Vasilakis (Toms River, NJ) in an apparent clear attempt, however, Vasilakis was not in position for a clear. The miscommunication resulted in a 2-1 halftime edge for Pittsburgh.

Rutgers continued its dominating play in the second half, but could not finish several close opportunities. The Scarlet Knights finally netted the equalizer with 11 minutes remaining as Herman punched home a feed from senior Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay). Mora received a ball in the box and fooled the defense by passing on the shot and kicking it over to Herman, who netted his second goal of the night, igniting a celebration on the field.

Rutgers found the back of the net again 35 seconds later as freshman Tommy Gray (Middletown, NJ) served a perfect ball into the box where senior Brian Johnson (Marshfield, MA) was waiting, heading the ball in from 15 yards out.

Rutgers seemed to control the final minutes of regulation, but Pittsburgh was able to capitalize on a corner kick, with Billy Brush heading in the cross from Chris Bastidas to tie the match at 3-3 with a little more than five minutes to play in regulation. The score deflated the Scarlet Knights who seemed on their way to a season-opening victory.

Rutgers had a golden opportunity to win the match in the final seconds of regulation but Joe Donoho’s (Tampa, FL) shot sailed wide of the near post as time ran out.

The Scarlet Knights outshot the Panthers, 13-7, holding a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks. Vasilakis earned his first regular-season start in goal, recording two saves. His counterpart, Justin Lowery made four stops for the Panthers.

Rutgers will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when it hosts Monmouth at 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
