  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - In a reversal of the last time these two teams squared off on the Yurcak Stadium turf, Seton Hall escaped with a 1-0 victory against 12th-ranked Rutgers on Wednesday evening in men’s soccer exhibition action.

In their last meeting under much cooler temperatures in early November, the Scarlet Knights and Pirates squared off in the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals, with RU pulling out the 1-0 victory in overtime on a header from Bart Koffeman (The Hague, Holland).

Both teams were physical in the early going on Wednesday night, as 13 first-half fouls were whistled. The Scarlet Knights had a number of opportunities to score, but could not get the ball into the net.

Seton Hall broke through for a goal in the 43rd minute, as John Raus served a ball into the box where the Pirates’ Justin McGrath and Mark Pedreiras both came in for the cross. Pedreiras finally corralled it and slipped it past Rutgers goalkeeper Bill y Chiles (Silver Spring, MD) for the score.

Chiles, a redshirt freshman, was seeing his first collegiate action in the match. He split time in goal with sophomore Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) and senior George Vasilakis (Toms River, NJ). Ancin began the match, playing the first 28 minutes before Chiles relieved him. Vasilakis played the final 29 minutes of the contest, making RU’s lone save of the evening.

Rutgers had several open chances but could not counter, with the Pirates holding on for the 1-0 victory.

Senior transfer Andrew Herman (Oceanside, NY) was active in his debut in a Scarlet Knight uniform, but could not score, ending the night with two shots. He was one of 10 players to see their first collegiate action on Wednesday night, joining, Abdul Kargbo (Alexandria, VA), Jake Martenson (Winchester. VA), Ed Ohin (Louisville, KY), Tommy Gray (Middletown, NJ), Zach Simi (East Brunswick, NJ), Kyle Grato (West Windsor, NJ), Warren Richards (Philadelphia, PA), Chiles and Vasilakis.

Rutgers outshot Seton Hall, 9-7 in the match. SHU’s Boris Pardo and Ian Joyce split time in goal, with Pardo making the Pirates’ lone stop.

Rutgers will travel to Columbus, OH, to take on Ohio State in the College Cup Preview match at Columbus Crew Stadium on Friday, Aug. 27, in its final exhibition tune-up. The Scarlet Knights open their regular season at home against Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m.
