PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University men’s soccer team is ranked 12th nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Poll, released on Tuesday.
The Scarlet Knights return eight starters from a team that finished the 2003 season 11-7-4, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. RU finished the season tied for 23rd in the final NSCAA poll of the season.
Rutgers is one of four BIG EAST schools represented on the preseason list, joining St. John’s (second), Notre Dame (ninth), Connecticut (10th) and Seton Hall (receiving votes).
Six of RU’s 2004 opponents appear on the organization’s preseason poll, including three in the top 10. Besides St. John’s, Notre Dame, Connecticut and Seton Hall, Rutgers will face the University of Michigan (16th) and Old Dominion (18th) during the regular season.
Rutgers meets Seton Hall on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Yurcak Field in the first of two exhibition matches. The Scarlet Knights will travel to Columbus, OH, to face Ohio State in a College Cup Preview match on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. Rutgers opens its regular season at home against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
