Rutgers Tabbed Fifth in BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Preseason Poll

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers men’s soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the 2004 BIG EAST preseason poll in a vote by the league’s 12 head coaches.

    Rutgers returns eight starters from a 2003 team that posted an 11-7-4 overall record including an appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s second round. The Scarlet Knights received 79 points to place behind Boston College, which tallied 84 points. St. John’s was picked to capture the 2004 conference title, garnering 117 points, while Connecticut was second with 108 points, followed by Notre Dame with 104 points.

    RU, which was also picked fifth in last season’s poll, finished fourth in the league in 2003. The Scarlet Knights advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the eighth time in nine appearances.

    Rutgers, under the direction of head coach Bob Reasso, opens the 2004 campaign with an exhibition contest at home against Seton Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., before traveling to Columbus, OH, and a exhibition matchup with Ohio State in a College Cup preview match slated for Friday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. the MLS’ Columbus Crew Stadium. The Scarlet Knights’ regular season begins at home against BIG EAST foe Pittsburgh on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
