MORGANTOWN, WV – Junior Josh Gros (Mechanicsburg, PA) entered the 2002 season with no career goals and, until this week, had just one to his credit in two-plus seasons of action. Three days after registering his first career hat trick in a 7-1 win over Princeton, Gros was the hero again, scoring at the 86:25 mark to give Rutgers a 1-0 win over West Virginia in BIG EAST men’s soccer action.
The win improved Rutgers to 8-6-3 overall and 5-3-1 in BIG EAST play, clinching the Scarlet Knights a berth in the BIG EAST Championship. Rutgers has now won three in a row heading into its regular season finale on Monday night, when it hosts Boston College at 5:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
Gros’ goal came after a shot by Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) was deflected to Gros on the left side of the box. Gros settled the bounding ball and slipped it past the outstretched arms of WVU keeper Chris McKinney with a strong shot from 10 yards out to make the difference.
Rutgers dominated play from start to finish, out-shooting the Mountaineers 20-5. Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) made one save in net, registering his fifth shutout of the season, with help from Guy Abrahamson (Livingston, NJ), Don Gray (Toms River, NJ) and Anthony Schiavino (North Hunterdon, NJ). Rutgers also had a 6-3 advantage in corners in handing WVU (4-10-2; 1-7-1 BE) its eighth one-goal loss of the season.
