PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 23, 2014) – Redshirt junior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) sent a header in from the left post off a corner kick from sophomore Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) to end the Rutgers men's soccer team's preseason with a 1-0 victory over NJIT on Saturday night at Yurcak Field.
“We are still making progress and there are certainly some things we can clean up. We need to work on managing ourselves through the last few minutes of a game like this,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “NJIT is a very disciplined, hardworking, organized team, so for me, it’s just continued preparation for our opener on Friday night.”
Correa’s goal came in the game’s 24th minute as Rutgers outshot NJIT, 14-6, and held a 7-2 advantage in corners.
Correa had a chance for an insurance goal with just over a minute remaining in the contest. From the left post, at point blank range, Correa’s shot was thwarted by outstretched Highlander goalkeeper Brett Conrads to keep the Scarlet Knights to just one goal on the evening.
Correa ended the night with four shots on goal, while freshman forward Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) accounted for four shots, including a pair on goal.
Sophomores Mitch Wailer (Holmdel, N.J.) and David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) once again spilt time in net. Walier got the start in goal, making one save during a scramble in the box.
The Scarlet Knights open the 2014 regular season on Friday, August 29 against UMKC at 8 p.m. at Yurcak Field. The contest is the second game of a double header featuring the RU women's soccer team taking on Seton Hall at 5:30 p.m.
