PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 22, 2014) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team will host NJIT in its final preseason tune-up at Yurcak Field on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
The Scarlet Knights faced No. 3 Virginia in their first preseason contest, prevailing over the Cavaliers with a 2-1 victory. Freshman forward Miles Hackett (Montclair, N.J.) made his Scarlet Knight debut netting both goals.
The Scarlet Knights return 11 letterwinners, including seven starters from a team that made a late season run in last year’s American Athletic Conference Tournament. After a 5-1 victory over Cincinnati in the American play-in game, marking the most goals by a RU team since 2006, the Scarlet Knights upset top-seeded and seventh-ranked Louisville in the tournament quarterfinals. Rutgers’ tournament run ended in the American semifinals, but eventual champion USF needed double overtime to get past the Scarlet Knights.
NJIT, who will be entering its first season as an auxiliary member of the Sun Belt in men’s soccer, finished last season at 7-9-2 as an independent. The Highlanders had a pair of one-goal losses on the road against nationally-ranked St. John's and Fairleigh Dickinson.
Following Saturday night’s meeting with NJIT, Rutgers will open the 2014 regular season hosting UMKC at Yurcak Field on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m.
