  • Freshman Miles Hackett ties the game up at 1-1 off a free kick from redshirt junior JP Correa

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (August 16, 2014) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team opened up preseason action with a 2-1 win over Virginia on Saturday night at Klockner Stadium.  Freshman forward Miles Hackett (Montclair, N.J.) made his Scarlet Knight debut netting both goals.

"It was great to get this exhibition win against a team that was talented all over the field and one that will certainly have another outstanding year," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We managed to get a look at a lot guys tonight, especially the ones we brought in to fill certain roles on the field. Our goal is to get better each and every day as a team. We will learn and grow from this exhibition win as we head into our next game."

The Cavaliers, a team that reached the semifinals of last year’s College Cup and ranks at No. 3 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Poll, took an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. UVA was able to capitalize on a turnover just outside the box with Peter Pearson feeding Riggs Lennon for a shot to the left corner from 12 yards out.

Rutgers, however, managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the game’s 23rd minute. Hackett, one of seven newcomers to take to the field for the first time as Scarlet Knights, headed in a free kick from redshirt junior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) from five yards out.

The game remained tied until the 65th minute when Hackett found the back of the Cavalier net on a short tap in off a rebound for the game-winner.

Hackett finished the game with a game-high four shots, including three on net. Rutgers ended the game outshooting Virginia, 5-3.

Both sophomores David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) and Mitch Wailier (Holmdel, N.J.) saw time in goal for the Scarlet Knights. Greczek, who made 108 saves last season, made RU’s lone save in playing first half action. Wailer played the entire second half, however did not register a save as the Rutgers defense kept the Cavaliers without a shot the final 45 minutes of play.

RU will host NJIT in its final preseason tune-up on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights host UMKC in the 2014 opener on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m.
