PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 15, 2014) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team travels to Virginia for an exhibition meeting with the Cavaliers, one of two preseason matches for the Scarlet Knights before officially opening the regular season and their inaugural year in the Big Ten. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Scarlet Knights return 11 letterwinners, including seven starters from a team that made a late season run in last year’s American Athletic Conference Tournament. After a 5-1 victory over Cincinnati in the American play-in game, marking the most goals by a RU team since 2006, the Scarlet Knights upset top-seeded and seventh-ranked Louisville in the tournament quarterfinals. Rutgers’ tournament run ended in the American semifinals, but eventual champion USF needed double overtime to get past the Scarlet Knights.
Virginia returns nine letterwinners from its 2013 squad that finished at 13-6-5 overall and reached the College Cup semifinals. The Cavaliers are ranked third in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Poll.
RU will host NJIT in its final preseason tune-up on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights host UMKC in the 2014 opener on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m.
