Rutgers, which outshot Penn 15-10, nearly avoided its second overtime match in a row, squandering its best scoring chance in the final seconds of regulation. With :13 left to play, senior Guy Abrahamson (Livingston, NJ) sent a free kick into the box, which sophomore Brian Johnson (Marshfield, MA) raced towards and kicked just wide of the Quaker goal.
Penn opened the extra session by moving the ball into Rutgers’ end, and Duyan corralled the ball on the left side and knocked it into the box. The ball skipped past a Rutgers defender and found its way to Maier, who struck the ball into the left side of the net past a diving Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY).
Zinter made one save in net for Rutgers, while Penn’s Matthew Haefner stopped four. Rutgers suffered yet another injury tonight, as starting midfielder Sherif El Bialy (Cairo, Egypt) left the game in the middle of the second half and did not return after colliding with a Penn player.
Rutgers will return to action on Saturday night, when it hosts Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m. The team will celebrate “Senior Night” with a ceremony prior to the match.
