Rutgers’ defense dominated the first 90 minutes of play, holding the Gamecocks to just one shot on goal during regulation. Unable to score itself against USC’s defense, Rutgers faced its fourth overtime game of the season and fourth against a nationally-ranked opponent.
The decisive play began when Lawson Vaughn served the second of back-to-back corner kicks into the box. RU goalkeeper Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) attempted to punch the ball away, but fell backwards upon contact and the ball squirted out to Rosenfeld, whose shot from eight yards out settled into the left corner of the goal.
Rutgers outshot USC, 12-9, while the Gamecocks held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Strong defensive play from senior Guy Abrahamson (Livingston, NJ) and juniors Don Gray (Toms River, NJ) and Josh Gros (Mechanicsburg, PA) limited USC to just two shots on goal, as Zinter made one save. Michael Bachmeyer made four in net for the Gamecocks.
Rutgers will return to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Penn in an 8:00 p.m. match at Yurcak Field. That contest will follow a Rutgers-Loyola women’s game, set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
