  • WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (August 20, 2013) – The Rutgers men’s soccer team battled in-state rival Monmouth to a scoreless tie in its first preseason showing of the 2013 campaign.

“I thought it was a good game for both teams to see where we are at this early stage of preseason, but the regular season starts very soon.  We have some things to improve upon, which is normal at this point,” said Rutgers head coach Dan Donigan. “I have great respect for Robby McCourt and Monmouth and knew this would be a great game for us to prepare for our season. They are a very good team that plays quality soccer.”

Neither squad was able to reach the back of the net after two 30-minute periods followed by another 20-minute session.  Monmouth, who is receiving votes in the College Soccer News Preseason Poll and returns three regional All-Americans, held a slight advantage in shots, 7-6

Newcomer Erik Sa (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was able to fire away three shots on the Hawk net, while American All-Preseason member Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) had one attempt, as did sophomore Dimitri Vassiliadis (Franklin, N.J.) and rookie Andrew Weber (Andover, N.J.) from off the bench.

All seven RU newcomers saw action while redshirt sophomore JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) returned to the field for the first time since early last season.  Correa, who led RU in scoring as a freshman, played in only four games for the Scarlet Knights last season before being sidelined with injury.

The Scarlet Knights, who are looking to fill the goalkeeper position following the graduation of Kevin McMullen, saw three netminders get playing time.  Freshman Mitchell Wailer (Holmdel, N.J.) posted Rutgers’ lone save of the afternoon, with fellow freshman David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Ryan Baird (Plainfield, N.J.) each getting time in goal.

The Rutgers men’s soccer team will play its final exhibition contest of the 2013 preseason on Saturday, August 24.  The Scarlet Knights will host No. 25 Virginia at Yurcak Field at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

Season tickets for RU men’s soccer are available for $50 for adults, $40 for children 12 & under and seniors 55 & older. All packages include a free t-shirt.  Season tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 732-907-1570.
