PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 24, 2012) – Junior forward Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) posted two goals as the Rutgers men’s soccer team dropped Villanova (10-5-2, 2-3-2) by a score of 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights move to 7-7-1 on the season, including 3-3-1 in BIG EAST play, and will await future results to determine their postseason fate.
Rutgers posted the golden goal in the 98th minute. Sophomore defender Thomas O’Rourke (Lawrenceville, N.J.) brought the ball down the field, crossing a pass to Eze off the end line. The forward headed the shot into the bottom left of the net for his fourth game-winning goal of 2012.
The Scarlet Knights struck first in the 77th minute, as freshman Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) scored his third goal of the season. Freshman Mael Corboz (Green Brook, N.J.) made three moves to beat a VU defender on the right sideline. The midfielder lofted a cross to a cutting Taintor, who headed the ball just over VU keeper John Fogarty’s outstretched arm.
Villanova midfielder Kyle Soroka evened the score four minutes later off a free kick. From 18 yards out on the far side, Soroka put the ball into the right side of the net.
Eze put the Scarlet Knights up 2-1 in the 87th minute. Coming from 18 yards out on the left side, Eze beat two Wildcat defenders and buried a shot into the upper portion of the net.
A RU own goal in the 88th minute forced overtime.
For the match, the Scarlet Knights outshot the Wildcats by a 20-7 mark. Senior goalkeeper Kevin McMullen (Blackwood, N.J.) had to make just one save to earn his seventh win of the year.
