PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 17, 2012) – Despite a strong second half effort, the Rutgers soccer team was edged by No. 15 St. John’s, 2-1, Wednesday night at Yurcak field. The Scarlet Knights (6-6-1, 2-3-1) were led by freshman midfielder Dimitri Vassiliadis (Franklin, N.J.) with his first career score.
St. John’s (9-2-4, 3-2-1) struck first in the 20th minute. After a STJ corner kick, the RU defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box. Gabriel Camara corralled the ball, finishing from 20 yards out in front of the net.
STJ’s Andres Vargas added to the total in the 25th minute. A failed RU clear settled at Vargas’ feet in the box, and the forward put a shot in the back of the net.
Vassiliadis brought the Scarlet Knights within one in the 58th minute. Junior forward Kene Eze (Sayreville, N.J.) made a strong move on the end line, beating a defender and crossing it to Vassiliadis. The freshman was able to tap in for the score.
RU went on an offensive attack in the second stanza. The Scarlet Knights totaled seven shots, including three on frame over the final 45 minutes. In the final minutes, Dragan Naumoski (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and Drew Morgan (Atlanta, Ga.) headed shots toward the net off corner kicks, but STJ keeper Rafael Diaz was there for the saves.
Senior goalkeeper Kevin McMullen (Blackwood, N.J.) made one save in the effort.
Rutgers head to Cincinnati this weekend for a 7 p.m. Saturday matchup. The Scarlet Knights will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 24 against Villanova (7 p.m.).
