OMAHA, Neb. (August 31, 2012) – Rutgers men’s soccer (1-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 1-0 contest against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the opening match of the Ameritas Classic on Friday, Aug. 31, on the campus of Creighton in Omaha, Neb.
“We gave up a restart goal nine and half minutes into the game and it’s an obvious mistake in the back that you can’t afford to do at this level,” said head coach Dan Donigan. “SIUE was able to manage the game so hats off to them; they’re a good soccer team. We had some very good, quality chances later in the second half but it wasn’t enough to put us back in the game to get the tying goal.
“It was a tough loss to take but at the same time, it’s still early in the season, we’re still growing as a team and we’re only going to continue to get better. We just have to regroup and get ready for an exceptional Creighton team.”
The Cougars (3-0-0) took the early lead with a first half goal and SIUE goalkeeper made five saves to keep the Scarlet Knights off the scoreboard and seal the win. Peter Kelly scored a header off a pass from Kevin Stoll in the nine minute to pull ahead 1-0.
After being held to just two shots in the first half, the Scarlet Knights turned things around in the second 45 minutes of action, outshooting the Cougars 7-5, however, they were unable to find the back of the net. RU also put four shots on frame in the second half. Rutgers also outpaced SIUE 6-1 in the corner kick category.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action for its second game of the Ameritas Classic, taking on host and second-ranked Creighton on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3:30 p.m.
