Rutgers Men’s Soccer Hits Road For Two Matches At Ameritas Classic
Scarlet Knights take on SIU-Edwardsville, No. 2 Creighton

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 29, 2012) – Rutgers men’s soccer (1-0) heads to Omaha, Neb. for its first road games of the season at the Ameritas Classic on the campus of Creighton. The Scarlet Knights will face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m. and the second-ranked Jays on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3:30 p.m. It will be the first meeting between Rutgers and both programs.

    Rutgers opened the 2012 campaign with a 1-0 win over Fordham on Friday, Aug. 24. Freshman defender Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) scored his first collegiate goal in his debut to give the Scarlet Knights the lead, while senior goalkeeper Kevin McMullen (Blackwood, N.J.) helped seal the victory with his first shutout of the year. McMullen recorded four saves, all in the second half, including a penalty kick to preserve the win.

    For their efforts, both Taintor and McMullen were recognized by the BIG EAST with weekly honors. Taintor was named the Rookie of the Week, while McMullen was selected the Goalkeeper of the Week. McMullen was also chosen to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.

    SIU-Edwardsville is 2-0 to start the season, winning the Hilton Garden Inn Hokies Invitational with victories over Virginia Tech and No. 19 James Madison. SIUE defeated the Hokies 3-1 and the Dukes 1-0. The Cougars were led by Jared Tejada and Matt Polster, who were named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. Tejada scored both game winners, while Polster helped limit opponents to nine shots in two games and a 0.50 goals against average.

    Creighton, ranked second in the NSCAA Top-25, opened the year with a 3-1 victory over Northern Illinois. After falling behind in the second half, the Jays responded with three unanswered goals to rally for the win. Creighton received two goals from Sean Kim and another tally from Carlos McCrary. The Jays will face No. 7 Akron to open the Ameritas Classic on Friday night.
