Rutgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:20 mark, when freshman Scott Gahagan (Old Bridge, NJ) sent a long pass ahead to El Bialy, who slipped behind the defense for his third tally of the season. The assist was the first of Gahagan’s career.
At the 28:14 mark, SU’s Garrett Johnson scored off a free kick to tie the match, while Jarrett Park registered the game-winner at the 63:08 mark when he scored from the top of the penalty area.
“I thought we played well today,” said head coach Bob Reasso. “We controlled about 60% of the possession, but we didn’t finish our chances and let them off the hook.”
Rutgers held a 19-12 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) stopped two shots in goal for the Scarlet Knights, while Alim Karim stopped seven for the Orangemen.
Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, when it travels to Monmouth University for a non-league contest at 3:00 p.m. Last season, Rutgers upended Monmouth, 5-1, at Yurcak Field.
