NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - The No. 12 Rutgers men’s lightweight varsity eight team upset the No. 8 Penn Quakers to retain the Lev Brett Cup on March 27 on the Raritan River.
For the second consecutive year the Scarlet Knights were victorious over the Quakers in the race for the cup. The team finished in 5:41.6 to narrowly edge out Penn (5:42.1).
“ Penn closed in at the end, but the team really cranked it up to hold onto the lead,” Rutgers lightweight head coach Paul Hammond said. “The lightweights really stepped it up today and it’s an experience they can build on.”
The second varsity boat (5:50.1) was also victorious over the Quakers (5:56.2), while Penn’s first freshmen boat (6:02.8) defeated Rutgers’ first freshmen (6:02.8).
The lightweight team will be back in action on Saturday, April 10, when it takes on Columbia for the Wit Cup in New Brunswick.
