Heavyweight Crew Defeats Columbia to Capture Collins Cup

  • NEW YORK, NY - The Rutgers men’s varsity eight team opened the season with a win over Columbia on the Harlem River on March 27 to win the Collins Cup.

    The Scarlet Knights, ranked 17th in the most recent USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Men’s Varsity Eights Poll (March 24), finished in 5:53.0 to defeat the Lions (6:07.0).

    “The team rowed a great race and went very fast for so early in the season,” Rutgers heavyweight head coach Steve Wagner said.

    The Columbia freshmen boat (6:11.1) defeated the Rutgers’ freshmen boat in the only other race of the day.

    The heavyweight team will return home to the Raritan River for a race tomorrow, March 28, against Georgetown.
