Rutgers Rowing Focused on Strong Spring Campaign
By Alexis Cerullo
Coming off a strong finish to its fall competition, the Rutgers’ rowing team is ready to take on its spring season.
This year’s team is made up of many veteran athletes, including seniors Ashley Cha (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Stephanie Ford (Nutley, N.J.).
Cha said the team will try to use the momentum from their victory at the Rutgers Classic, the Scarlet Knights’ last race of the fall season, to start off the new season with a big win.
“There was a lot of learning that went on, even between the fall and the winter pre-season for spring,” Ford added.
Head coach Max Borghard, who enters his 20th year at Rutgers, said he is working hard to keep the team on track to reach its goals.
“We really try and stay focused on where we can get to,” Borghard said.
As for specific goals, the team has high expectations heading into the spring. According to Cha, her teammates have their eyes on the AAC championship.
“Winning the AAC Championship is a really big goal that we have, hopefully winning it and going to NCAAs,” Cha said. “It’s attainable – I feel like that’s our main goal, but besides that we’re just trying to win as many competitions as we can.”
Ford said she also wants to see her team win.
“I think we’re just coming into this season really hungry, just looking for medals and first place finishes,” she said.
