Rutgers Rowing Opens Season at Murphy Cup

  • The Rutgers rowing team opened the spring 2012 season Saturday March 24, at the Murphy Cup Regatta in Pennasauken, N.J.

    The varsity eight placed second in their preliminary heat with a time of 08:03.23, falling just short to Bucknell (07:57.00). The Scarlet Knights improved their time to 07:46.59 in the finals and ranked second overall behind Temple (07:42.31). Following the Rutgers’ boat was Bucknell (07:53.37), Connecticut (08:01.25), La Salle (08:14.89) and Lehigh (08:28.60).

    Racing in the 1V line up were:Ellie Kleiman (cox), Stephanie Ford (stroke), Raelyn Loiselle (7), Kat Geithman (6), Laura Ford (5), Kathleen Lai (4), Katie Bakaj (3), Veronica Leach (2), Jenelle Scheffler (bow). 

    The second varsity eight finished third in their heat, ahead of La Salle, Colgate and Sacred Heart. George Washington won the heat, followed by Navy. Racing the 2V line up were: Katie Quinn (cox), Emily Nowlin (stroke), Emilia Topp (7), Ashley Cha (6), Julia Dawidowicz (5), Brittany Somers (4), Andrea Samulewski (3), Fran Carrone (2), Joanna Witynska (bow). 

    The first varsity four finished fourth in their heat ahead of Fordham. Drexel won the heat, followed by Pittsburgh and Navy. Racing in the V4 line-up were: Alex Zembrowski (cox), Kate Meyler (stroke), Gabby Oliviera (3), Morgan Knigge (2) and Melissa McCleery (bow).

    Rutgers’ next stop is Syracuse, N.Y. on March 31. The Scarlet Knights will be facing Syracuse, Cornell, and Boston University.
