PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 14, 2011) – The Rutgers first varsity eight finished second in the grand final at the Knecht Cup Regatta, Sunday April 10, on the Cooper River.
The Scarlet Knights led for the first 1500m, with Old Dominion (ODU) and Grand Valley maintaining overlap into the third 500m. Rutgers broke free of ODU, but couldn’t stave off a push that drew Grand Valley even with 500m to go. With open water on the field, it was a two-boat race between Rutgers and Grand Valley in the final 500m. Grand Valley finished first in 6:47.3, 0.27 seconds ahead of Rutgers (6:47.6). ODU (6:53.5), Duke (6:55.3), West Virginia (7:02.7), and Wisconsin lwt (7:05.1) rounded out the field.
The 1V8 won their heat Saturday morning by open water, beating Kansas, UMass, Marist and Villanova. They then won their semi-final Saturday afternoon in 6:44.8, ahead of Big East rival West Virginia (6:46.8), Drexel (6:50.8), Buffalo (6:51.4), Temple (6:56.1) and Colgate (7:11.0).
The second varsity eight led wire to wire to win their petite final in 7:11.1, ahead of Drexel (7:14.6), Kansas A (7:15.1), West Virginia 7:31.5), Fordham (7:35.0), and Kansas B (7:41.8).
The novice eight and varsity four did not advance out of the Saturday heats.
Rutgers races for the Raritan Cup and Class of ’89 Plate (awarded to the varsity eight winner and overall team points winner respectively) against Cornell and Penn in Ithaca, NY, Saturday April 16.
