Piscataway, N.J. (March 30, 2011) – The Rutgers rowing varsity eight was named the BIG EAST Boat of the Week after winning at the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuykill River, the conference announced Wednesday.

“Winning the Murphy Cup was a goal our athletes set for the early season,” said head coach Max Borghard.  “It's nice to achieve a goal like that, and it's an honor for them to be recognized by the BIG EAST rowing community. At the same time, the season is still early. We respect our competition and know we have to keep working hard.”

Racing in the 1V line-up were: Katie Quinn (Northfield, N.J.), Katherine Geithman (Falls Church, Va.), Janine Ford (Nutley, N.J.), Helen Becz (Rutherford, N.J.), Raelyn Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.), Stephanie Ford (Nutley, N.J.), Mary Gromlowicz (Hampton, N.J.), Kathleen Lai (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Christine Hannigan (Wayne, N.J.).

After winning their heat of six teams with a time of 6:26.66, the Scarlet Knights first varsity eight went on to win the final in 6:38.3. Following the Rutgers boat were St. Joseph's (6:41.1), Navy (6:43.87), Drexel (6:47.12), Bucknell (6:49.03) and Fordham (6:54.96).

Rutgers established a lead by the 1000 meter mark and never looked back.

In the closing sprint, Rutgers continued pushing out on the field, extending their lead to a seat of open water over St. Joe's.

Rutgers will be back in action Saturday, April 2, hosting Princeton and Navy on the Raritan.
