Philadelphia, Pa. (March 28, 2011) – The Rutgers rowing team opened the spring 2011 season Saturday March 26, at the Murphy Cup Regatta in Philadelphia.
After winning their heat, the Scarlet Knights first varsity eight went on to win the final in 6:38.3. Following the Rutgers boat were St. Joseph's (6:41.1), Navy (6:43.87), Drexel (6:47.12), Bucknell (6:49.03) and Fordham (6:54.96).
Rutgers established a lead lead by the 1000 meter mark and never looked back.
"Working powerfully through the body of the race says a lot about the quality of work we put in over the winter," said senior Helen Becz (Rutherford, N.J.).
In the closing sprint, Rutgers continued pushing out on the field, extending their lead to a seat of open water over St. Joe's.
“It feels like we haven't stopped racing since last spring,” said Janine Ford (Nutley, N.J.). “The speed is still there and we keep getting faster."
Racing in the 1V line-up were: Katie Quinn (Northfield, N.J.), Katherine Geithman (Falls Church, Va.), Ford, Becz, Raelyn Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.), Stephanie Ford (Nutley, N.J.), Mary Gromlowicz (Hampton, N.J.), Kathleen Lai (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Christine Hannigan (Wayne, N.J.).
The second varsity eight won their heat and placed fourth in the final. Racing in the 2V line-up were: Ellie Kleiman (Wyoming, Ohio), Emily Nowlin (West Windsor, N.J.), Laura Ford (Nutley, N.J.), Kara Trivolis (Bloomingburg, N.Y.), Katie Bakaj (Longport, N.J.), Ashley Mills (Mullica Hill, N.J.), Whitney Armstrong (Manassas, Va.), Stephanie Nunziato (Newton, N.J.) and Samantha Steffier (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
“The way they raced in the heat is certainly indicative of the 2V’s potential,” said head coach Max Borghard. “We know what we need to work on and we’re excited to move forward.”
The varsity four and novice eight results showed continued improvement in program depth. The varsity four event was the most subscribed of the regatta, with 28 entries and six heats, moving the winner of each heat to final. Rutgers led their heat in the second 500 meter but couldn't sustain a decisive push from Drexel, who won the heat.
“I’m proud of how these guys stepped up to the plate, especially since it was the first collegiate 2K for the four freshmen,” said associate head coach Heather Putnam.
Racing in the V4 line-up were: H. Kichen, Emilia Topp (Vienna, Va.), Amanda Dothe (Linwood, N.J.), April Tobin (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Ashley Cha (Fort Lee, N.J.).
Rutgers’ novice eight finished fourth in their heat, ahead of Lafayette and Fordham. St. Joe’s won the heat, followed by Navy and Colgate. Racing in the novice eight line-up were: A. Hsieh, F. Carrone, J. Witynska, J. Diwidowicz, A. Baydar, C. Mullin, E. DeMango, L. Stager and F. Chao.
