  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – For the fifth-consecutive year, Rutgers men captured third-place in the race for the BIG EAST Conference Commissioner's Trophy. Rutgers women placed fifth overall.

Paced by the baseball team, who won the BIG EAST regular-season championship, RU men garnered 71 points, the most during the Scarlet Knights’ eight-year BIG EAST membership.

RU women earned 78 points, behind the efforts of the swimming and diving and basketball teams. The swimming and diving team finished second at the BIG EAST Championships and 37th at the 2003 NCAA Championships.. The women’s basketball team also finished second in the conference and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame won both the men’s (97) and women’s (120) titles, marking the eighth consecutive trophy for the Fighting Irish men and the seventh award in a row for the women.

The award, which recognizes all-sports excellence, was first awarded for the men during the inaugural 1979-80 season, and the first women’s award was handed out in 1982-83. Point totals for each sport are based upon regular-season finishes for sports which the BIG EAST conducts round-robin competition (field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse) or on championship finishes for sports without in-season play (track and field, swimming and diving, golf, cross country and tennis). For sports with divisional play (women’s soccer, men’s basketball), points were awarded based on overall winning percentage at the conclusion of the regular season.
