INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA is honoring 712 Division I sports teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores.
The Rutgers football team was one of only six Football Bowl Subdivision programs to be ranked in the top 10 percent in the APR scores. Rutgers is the lone state university on the list and the only institution to have its football team ranked in the top 10 percent of the APR and to have won a bowl game last season.
Joining Rutgers in the top 10 percent include Duke, Rice, Stanford, Air Force and Navy.
"We are proud of our players continued commitment to be the best they can be – both on the field and off," said Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. "The latest Academic Progress Rate scores, which represent a four-year average, are especially encouraging when you consider how challenging Rutgers is academically."
The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.
Two other sports earned a top 10 percent APR honor at Rutgers – women's tennis and men's cross country.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
Multi-year APR scores for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced May 6.
