  • PISCATAWAY, NJ -- The Rutgers University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring a blood drive on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Hale Center – 3rd floor, on the east side of Rutgers Stadium.

Anyone wishing to donate blood can contact Susan Beurskens at 732-445-7869 to set up an appointment time. The blood drive will run from 10am – 8pm. Walk-ins will be welcome. Anyone wishing to donate blood should bring an official form of identification that features your signature and/or photo, and you should also have your social security number on hand.

Each donor will have one pint of blood taken by a skilled, specially trained technician. The entire process, which includes completing a registration form and completing a medical review prior to the actual donation, normally takes about one hour.

The blood drive is being conducted in coordination with New Jersey Blood Services, a division of the New York Blood Center. The last blood drive conducted by the SAAC in April 2002 resulted in the collection of 161 pints of blood. Because the United States no longer imports blood from Europe, the need for new donors is more pressing now than ever before. All blood collections will help provide life support for victims of accidents, surgical patients, and to treat patients battling leukemia, hemophilia, and cancer, to name a few.

SAAC is a student-athlete run organization whose goal is to act as a liaison and maintain lines of communication between student-athletes and the athletic administration, as well as to advance the interests and pool the resources of all athletic programs at Rutgers. They also strive to foster community awareness of Rutgers Athletics, as well as devise community service projects for athletes.

For more information on the blood drive, please contact Susan Beurskens in the Rutgers Sports Marketing Office at (732) 445-7869, New Jersey Blood Services at 1-800-933-BLOOD, or visit www.nybloodcenter.org.
