  • RVISION: T&F's Rashmi Singh Named Fulbright Scholar

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 17, 2014) – Recent cross country and track & field graduate Rashmi Singh (Flemington, N.J.) has been awarded a Fulbright Grant and will be traveling to Malaysia this fall.

Fulbright Grants are designed to give recent higher education degree recipients opportunities for personal development and international experience in nearly 150 countries and provides 8,000 grants annually to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university lecturing and classroom teaching.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, which administers the grants, reported that Rutgers was tied for third place among research universities nationwide for the number of students and alumni receiving grants in 2013. Rutgers was joined in the top 10 by two other Big Ten universities – Michigan and Northwestern – along with other prestigious schools such as Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale.

Singh, who graduated in May with a major in English and minor in environmental policy, institutions and behavior, will be using her Fulbright Grant to teach English in Malaysia. It will not be Singh’s first time aboard. Prior to her senior year, she had studied aboard in Turkey, helping farmers create sustainable farming techniques and produce business plans.

As a sophomore during the 2011-12 season, Singh placed fifth at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships and third at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships in 5000m, as well as sixth at the Colonial Relays as a member of the distance medley relay team.  During her junior campaign in 2012-13, she was the runner-up in the 10,000m at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships and placed third in the 3000m at the Rutgers Indoor Invitational.  In her final season as a Scarlet Knight in 2013-14, Singh was a second place finisher in the 3000m at the Rutgers Indoor Invitational and took sixth in the 5000m at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships.
