PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 10, 2014) – Rutgers University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Julie Hermann today announced that Tom Luicci will serve as the Scarlet Knights’ Senior Director of Digital Media. A New Jersey native and 1977 graduate of Rutgers, Luicci has worked as a sportswriter at the Newark Star-Ledger for the past 35 years, including the last 13 as RU’s football beat reporter.
“We are thrilled to announce that Tom Luicci is joining us on staff beginning in May,” said Hermann. “The opportunity to use his extensive experience to create an information portal for our fans and many critical constituents is vital to take advantage of our new Big Ten national stage.”
In this newly created position, which officially begins May 5, Luicci will develop a communications and messaging program via ScarletKnights.com that supports the needs of the students, fans, donors and university community. He will build content for the website, interface with department constituents, and advise athletics and university leadership regarding media and messaging strategies.
“I’d like to thank Dr. Robert Barchi and Julie Hermann for the opportunity to return to Rutgers, which has been my second home for the past four decades,” said Luicci. “As a Rutgers graduate, I’m excited about being part of the most significant era in school history with the move to the Big Ten, and I’m looking forward to interacting with Rutgers fans and giving them another outlet for Scarlet Knights sports news on ScarletKnights.com.”
A 10-time winner of the New Jersey Sportswriter of the Year Award, presented by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, Luicci has served as the New Jersey State Chairman for both the Heisman Trophy and Wooden Award since 1990. A national college football and basketball writer at The Ledger from 1980 to 2001, he has covered approximately 30 football bowls, including over a half dozen national championship games. Luicci covered 30 consecutive NCAA Final Four college basketball championships from 1980 to 2009 and has served as a Triple Crown horse racing writer, including coverage of Kentucky Derby, from 1989 to present.
In 2006, Luicci was instrumental in the creation of Rutgers: An Amazing Season, a coffee table book that was a compilation of game stories and photographs from the 2006 football season.
Luicci began his sportswriting career “On the Banks,” as a three-time (1974-77) Sports Editor of The Daily Targum out of Brick Township High School. As an undergrad, he covered the Scarlet Knights’ 1975-76 Final Four run and undefeated 11-0 season on the gridiron (1976) before earning his degree in English Literature.
