BRONX, N.Y. (October 11, 2013) -- Senior Chris Banafato’s (Bridgewater, N.J.) seventh place finish helped the Rutgers men’s cross country team to a fourth place finish at the 2013 Metropolitan Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights improved upon last year’s sixth place finish by two spots collecting 119 points. NYU led the field with 24 points followed by Columbia in second with 66 points, Fordham in third with 98 points and RU in fourth.
Banafato was the top Rutgers finisher for the second straight season finishing the 8K course in a time of 26:28.54.
Junior Chris Defabio (Millington, N.J.) gave the Scarlet Knights a top 25 performance logging a time of 26:58.84 to finish in 21st place.
Other notable performances by the Scarlet Knights included junior Anthony Horton (Moorestown, N.J.), taking 31st overall in a time of 27:23.40, sophomore Jamin Vekaria (Clinton, N.J.) placing 35th in a time of 27:32.97 and freshman Sam Habib (Old Bridge, N.J.) immediately following in 36th in his time of 27:36.07.
Also competing for Rutgers were sophomore Daniel Lee (Plainsboro, N.J.) in 56th (28:19.32), senior Steve Burkholder (Marlton, N.J.) in 60th (28:25.06), senior Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) in 70th (28:50.03) and junior Brian Wells (Piscataway, N.J.) at 109th (32:12.58).
The Rutgers men’s cross country team returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the American Athletic Conference Championships in Madison, Conn.
