  • PISCATAWAY, N.J.  (October 10, 2013) – The Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated American Athletic Conference foe Houston, 1-0, Friday night at Yurcak Field. Junior Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute of action, as RU held on to take its third conference victory of the season.

With the win, RU (10-2-1, 3-1 AAC) improved to 8-0 at home for only the second time in program history. The squad is now one win shy of tying the record of nine wins set in 2006 and 2007.

“I was disappointed with our level tonight” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “It was a brilliant finish by Scholz. [Freshman] Jennifer Andresen (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) manipulated a defender and found Scholz and that’s what we work on.

“But we work on also disciple, hard work and good habits and a lot of other areas which were not too present too often tonight. We’re always ecstatic for the three points because I think the points are very important in the league standings.”

Scholz scored the match’s only goal in the 62nd minute of action, as RU pressured the Cougars (1-7-3, 0-5 AAC) throughout the night. Andresen received a ball in from the left side, tapping it to Scholz just inside the top right of the box. Scholz finished the helper, beating Houston keeper Cami Koski in the back left for the goal. It was Andresen’s second assist of the season.

With 17 shots against Houston, RU has now recorded at least 15 shots in six out of the last eight matches.

Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) improved to 10-2-1 on the season, making two saves in the match. She recorded her fifth shutout of the season with the victory.

The squad is back in action on Sunday against SMU, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live by RVision, presented by AT&T.

It also represents “Dads and Daughters Day,” where $16 will get RU fans a pair of tickets, a water bottle and a mini soccer ball. In order to qualify for the promotion, tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 1-866-445-GORU (4678).
