PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 1, 2013) – Redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canda) tallied the match’s first goal – her third of the season – in the 77th minute on a penalty kick attempt, igniting the RU offense to score two more goals en route to a 3-0 victory against Fordham Sunday at Yurcak Field.

Filigno recorded an assist to freshman Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) less than four minutes later and freshman Jessica Puchalski (South Brunswick, N.J.) notched her first career goal to make it a 3-0 game with 3:28 remaining in regulation.

Redshirt senior Jessica Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) improved to 4-0 this season and 10-3 for her career in the four-save outing, as she has yet to allow a goal this season. She currently rides a scoreless streak of 347:25 consecutive minutes to begin 2013, as the defense was once again stellar, allowing just four shots on goal.

The Scarlet Knights are now 4-0 for the third time since 2007 and sixth time in the program’s 30-year history.

“The first half did not have the same feeling of the second half,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “We didn’t really execute the game plan in the first half to the level that we did in the second half. The forwards – the timing was off on their runs – and there were certain things that Fordham was giving us that we weren’t taking advantage of. The goal is that we want our players to know what they want to do and use their special abilities. All-in-all I’m pleased with the victory but there is still improvement to be made.”

RU turned its offensive pressure up another notch to start the second half, recording six shots – two on goal – and two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the period. In all, the squad tallied 28 shots – 16 on goal – and eight corner kicks in the win. The shots total was the most for the Scarlet Knights since they defeated Bucknell, 3-0, on Sept. 5, 2010.

Tiernan set up the Filigno PK goal in the 77th minute, when she charged through the middle of the box before being tripped up by a Fordham defender. The foul in the box sent Filigno in to take a PK attempt for the second time in as many games, and for the second-straight match, the forward buried it in the back left to give RU the lead.

Filigno is now fourth all-time with 28 caps and is just one game-winner (14) shy of the all-time RU record held by Carli Lloyd and Kris Kurzynowski (15).

Filigno got in on the action again in the 81st minute, when freshman midfielder Jennifer Andresen (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) found a threatening Filigno in traffic just inside the top left corner of the box. From there, Filigno found Tiernan a few yards back, who launched a strike to the back right of the net for a 2-0 lead. The goal was Tiernan’s second goal and Filigno’s first assist of the season.

Puchalski ended the day with an exclamation point for the Scarlet Knights, as she dribbled her way down Fordham’s right side from midfield to 10 yards out, where she beat Rams keeper Megan Fitzgerald left to make it 3-0 RU.

Despite allowing three goals, Fitzgerald (0-2) posted a solid effort in between the pipes, recording 13 saves.

The Scarlet Knights hit the road on Friday, Sept. 6 for one of their toughest games on the slate, as RU travels to take on No. 5/6 Virginia in its first match of the University of Virginia Tournament. The Cavaliers are 3-0 to start this season and take on Richmond later this afternoon.

    • Filigno is now in fourth place all-time on the RU goals list with 28 for her career.
    • With a goal and an assist (three points), Filigno recorded her most points since posting four in RU’s 5-0 victory over Cincinnati on Oct. 14, 2012.
    • Janosz has now gone 347:25 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to being 2013. With the shutout – her third of the season – she inched closer to former RU great Erin Guthrie’s record streak of 403:39 minutes to begin the 2009 season.

    • RU’s 28 shots were the most recorded in a single game since a 3-0 victory over Bucknell on Sept. 5, 2010. The team’s 16 shots on goal are also the most since RU notched 18 in the Bucknell win.
    • Sophomore defender Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) logged the full 90 minutes for her third consecutive game in the victory. She is second in minutes this season to classmate Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.), who has logged 342 to Skroski’s 338.
    • With the 13-save performance, Fordham keeper Megan Fitzgerald became the first opposing goalkeeper to make at least 10 saves since RU defeated Stony Brook, 2-0, on Sept. 7, 2012.
