PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 23, 2013) – Freshman Madison Tiernan’s (Voorhees, N.J.) first career goal and a solid defensive outing propelled the Rutgers women’s soccer team to a season-opening victory on Friday night against Drexel at Yurcak Field. With the victory the Scarlet Knights improve to 11-0 in openers since 2003 and improve to 21-5-4 all-time in their first game of the season.

“We love our pitch, we love being at home and it was a quality win against a quality opponent,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “I was impressed with Drexel and I think it took us a little while to find ourselves. I think we really controlled the game more in the second half and it was definitely a good win.”

The lone goal for RU (1-0) came in the 50th minute of action, as sophomore Rachel Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) sent a ball through along the right side to a charging Tiernan. Tiernan handled the pass and blasted the shot from the upper right corner of the box, burying the ball in the back left corner of the net for her first career goal. Cole earned credit for the assist on the play, the third helper of her career and first points of the season.

RU outshot the Dragons, 8-3, in the contest and kept the pressure on throughout the match, registering a 7-2 corner kick advantage. Sophomore Brianne Reed (Tinton Falls, N.J.) spearheaded the RU backline, logging the full 90 minutes of the match for the first time of her career.

Redshirt senior Jess Janosz (Ringwood, N.J.) earned the victory to improve to 7-3 for her career. She made two saves in the match.

The defense for both squads held the opposition in check in the opening period, as each squad recorded only two shots in the goal-less first half. Redshirt senior Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Canada), who led RU with three shots, charged up the right in the match’s early going, sneaking behind the defense and putting a shot on Drexel (0-1) keeper Eve Badana.

That save by Badana was her only of the period, as junior Stef Scholz’s (South Hackensack, N.J.) shot opportunity from five yards out met the right of the goal in the 37th minute.

RU will resume its opening weekend on Sunday, when the team travels to West Point, N.Y. to face Army. Army, which went 8-10-0 last season, looks to get back on track under first-year head coach Marcia McDermott.

The meeting marks the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Season tickets for RU women’s soccer are still on sale and are $50 for adults, $40 for children 12 & under and seniors 55 & older. All packages include a free t-shirt.  Season tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at 732-907-1570.
