CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (March 23, 2013) – Having the best uneven bars score in the meet (48.900), Rutgers gymnastics notched a 193.925 team score at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships Saturday inside Carmichael Arena at the University of North Carolina. The team mark is the highest ever for the Scarlet Knights at the EAGL meet, topping last year’s performance of 193.850.

Rutgers placed seventh in the meet, as NC State took the championship with a 195.175 score.

“While we did not achieve our goal this season of reaching NCAA Regionals, I am very proud of the way the team developed throughout the year,” head coach Louis Levine said. “We were able to change the outlook of the program and put up some record scores. I believe the program is headed in the right direction and look forward to what the future holds.”

Starting on the vault, junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) led RU with a 9.800 on the way to a 48.400 team score. Also on First Team All-Vault, freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) picked up a 9.700 in her first conference meet.

A mark of 48.900 on the uneven bars was the best of any team in the event, being tied for the second best performance on the year for the Scarlet Knights. Junior Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) – a First Team All-Uneven Bars selection – paced the unit with a 9.825, while Leal and Williams both notched a 9.800.

Freshman Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) collected a 9.750 on the balance beam in the third rotation, as Rutgers scored a 48.075. Finishing on the floor exercise, Gunzelman and freshman Katie Stebick (Waterford, Pa.) both registered scores of 9.750 to lead the lineup to a mark of 48.550.

The Scarlet Knights will next await word on possible individual qualifiers to the NCAA Regionals, which are scheduled to be announced Monday.
